Stanley - english, University of Cambridge
Hello! I'm Stanley, a graduate of Queens’ College, Cambridge, where I earned an MPhil in English Studies. Prior to that, I completed a First-Class BA in English Literature at the University of Edinburgh and spent an exchange year at the University of California, Berkeley. My undergraduate dissertation on Alzheimer’s effects on authorship was awarded 80/100 and led to an invitation to present my findings at a postgraduate conference.
During my time as leader of the undergraduate English Literature society, I organised guest lectures by prominent authors and academics. More importantly, I developed a peer-assisted learning scheme. I delivered weekly tutorials on essay writing and course content to help fellow students improve their writing skills.
Outside of academia, I was recognised internationally as one of Foyle's 100 best young poets and received an ITN award for investigative journalism. I also hosted the most popular opinion column in the Daily Californian and worked for 6 months at Sterling Lord Literistic, a leading literary agency in Manhattan.
Before attending university, I spent ten years at King’s College School, Wimbledon, where I achieved 42/45 in my International Baccalaureate (IB) and nine A*s and two As at GCSE. My IB extended essay comparing Thoreau and Kerouac earned one of the highest grades in my cohort. In my final year, I was nominated Head of House.
I offer English tutoring for students of all levels, and have supported many students across a variety of ages, both in-person and online. I also have experience teaching French up to GCSE level. My teaching experience has included working with a number of students with special needs, which has broadened my understanding of different learning styles.
In English, there is often no single “right” answer. Many students find this prospect intimidating. That's why I focus on guiding students to ask the right questions. From KS3 to Oxbridge interviews, students who can formulate insightful questions are well on their way to developing sophisticated answers that will impress examiners. Above all, I enjoy helping students articulate their ideas with clear, concise, and convincing essays.
