Phoebe - chemistry, University of Oxford

Hello, my name is Phoebe Makin and I am a 4th year Chemist studying for an MChem from Somerville College, Oxford. At A Level, I studied Maths, French, and Chemistry, and achieved 11 Grade 9s at GCSE.

My passion for science truly shines through in my interactions with my students. Whilst I love sharing my enthusiasm with them, I am also aware that those subjects in which students may need extra help, may not necessarily be their favourite. Hence, I aim to establish a strong line of communication between tutor and student, ensuring that the student takes the lead in their learning. This approach tailors the tutoring experience to their needs and fosters an honest and collaborative working relationship.

Chemistry is often referred to as the "central science" because it is intricately intertwined with both Biology and Physics. Therefore, the knowledge and skills acquired throughout my degree allow me to confidently offer support in those subjects too, up to GCSE-level!

As well as tutoring, I spent a year as a learning support assistant, working with children aged 11-16 who required additional support in the classroom. I therefore have extensive experience assisting students with a diverse range of abilities and needs.

I aspire to support each individual’s growth in both their academic abilities and confidence, while further developing my skills as a tutor, to optimise the students’ academic success!
