Matt, Classics - University of Oxford
Hi, I’m Matt. I have five years of tutoring experience, specialising in English Language, English Literature, and university admissions preparation. I hold an undergraduate degree in Classics from the University of Oxford, followed by a Master’s in Political Philosophy, and I’m about to begin my doctoral degree in the coming academic year.
I began my tutoring journey at university with the “IntoUniversity” programme, where I supported a secondary school student in Maths and English, aiming to clarify difficult concepts and help build his academic confidence. Later, I took on a coaching role at "Universify," where I assisted students in refining their academic goals and developing strategies for university admissions.
More recently, I’ve worked with an undergraduate student, focusing on essay writing, reading comprehension, and time management. Through our work together, we developed a structured approach that contributed to improved writing clarity and successful exam outcomes. I’ve also supported students applying for university, particularly for Classics programmes, by designing translation exercises and interview preparation tools that help them develop the structured thinking required for admissions interviews.
Currently, I’m tutoring a secondary school student who is preparing for the 13+ English exam. Through our sessions, we’ve introduced literary concepts and expanded his vocabulary, leading to significant improvements in his test results.
What I value most about tutoring is the opportunity to help students grow and develop academically. My approach is thoughtful and student-oriented, always adapting to the individual needs of each learner. Whether in large group settings or one-on-one sessions, I’m committed to ensuring every lesson is engaging, effective, and tailored to the student’s unique learning style. Some of my testimonials include:
“Matt is able to brilliantly and efficiently understand complex concepts in history and philosophy and deliver constructive breakdowns of themes of both disciplines in such a way that essay writing and planning alongside the thought process that goes into it becomes much clearer.” Undergraduate student at Exeter University
"Matt is friendly and approachable and always keen to share his knowledge with others and support their development. He is patient and has the ability to communicate with people of all abilities." - Father of 11 year-old student
