Marianne - english, University of oxford

Hi! I’m Marianne. I’m a first class Oxford graduate in English Language and Literature. At Oxford I won a Scholarship, the W.H. Auden prize for writing, and several book prizes. I also scored 57/60 on my admissions exam. I really enjoyed many aspects of my degree, especially my dissertation on modern literature.

Next year, I’ll be lucky enough to continue my dissertation research! I’ve been offered a full scholarship from Cambridge to undertake an MPhil in English and French. My thesis is about the link between 21st century life writing (sometimes known as “autofiction”) and the 19th century Russian novel. This summer, I have been in Estonia trying to improve my Russian, which is coming along.

Before coming to Oxford, I was at school in Belgium, France and Ireland. I did an IB-style exam and did English (A* equivalent), French (A* equivalent), German (A* equivalent), Irish (A* equivalent), Mathematics (A* equivalent) and Physics (A equivalent). As you may be able to tell, I love learning languages— I find it very rewarding to be able to speak to lots of different kinds of people. In my spare time, I also enjoy baking and running.

I’ve had experience tutoring both at my school, and for Oxbridge candidates by referral. I applied to Oxford as an international student, so I understand the application system inside out. I’m available to help with every stage: from choosing a subject and college to personal statements and practice interviews.

I also tutor English from 11+ to A-Levels— my approach is to encourage your own interest in the subject, while bearing exam boards’ criteria firmly in mind.
