Louis, Maths - University of Oxford
Hi! I’m Louis, a recent mathematics graduate from Brasenose College, Oxford. During my degree, I explored a wide range of topics in both pure and applied mathematics before choosing to specialise in the applied side. I’m now continuing that journey with a Master’s degree in Applicable Mathematics at LSE, with a particular focus on Game Theory. I recently scored 85% in my Game Theory module – the second-highest mark out of over 200 people.
Following that, I chose to base my dissertation on game theory, where I am studying a giant game of hide-and-seek that takes place on the infinite number line. In this game, the numbers are the hiding spots, and I am analysing different strategies to find both the hider’s and seeker’s best strategies, along with the expected length of the game.
Before university, I achieved 3 A*s at A-level in Maths, Further Maths, and Spanish, 4 gold awards for UKMT maths challenges, and 99% in my maths GCSEs. These experiences put me in a strong position to help GCSE and A-level students achieve their maths goals!
I’ve been tutoring GCSE and A-level Maths and Further Maths for over four years. During that time, I’ve worked with a wide range of students and developed an approach that focuses on intuition as much as technique. For example, Ibuild intuition by discussing the different angles in which you can view a problem and how it might relate to topics we’ve previously studied. This allows students to see the bigger picture in maths problems and to apply what they have learned to other similar questions. If a student finds maths uninteresting, I also try to get the students to see it in a different, more exciting light by explaining why I find a particular problem exciting.
