JAYA

Hi, I’m Jaya! I’m a second-year student at Hertford College, Oxford, studying English Language and Literature.

At A-Level, I studied English Literature (A*), Spanish (A*) and Religious Studies (A*). At GCSE, I studied 10 subjects and achieved A*s in all of them, alongside achieving the top grade in my Free-Standing Mathematical Qualification (FSMQ).

I’ve been teaching ever since I was 14, and instantly fell in love with passing on the joys of learning. I have always focussed on teaching English, as well as teaching Spanish and Piano. More recently, I have also been volunteering to tutor underprivileged students applying to Oxbridge. My work has consisted of helping them with their interview skills as well as their personal statements and entrance exams. To me, tutoring is so much more than simply feeding a student information that they can regurgitate to pass an exam. I want my students to enjoy learning and be enthralled by their studies. I’d like to pass on the enthusiasm for academia that my favourite teachers instilled in me. My style of tutoring prioritises forming a personal relationship with the student that allows me to fully understand their strengths and weaknesses and tailor my sessions to their particular needs.

I have found this method far more successful than simply churning out past papers and model answers. My main aim when tutoring is to help my student feel confident in their subject and feel capable of achieving great results in their exam: this is half the battle. I have been teaching for 6 years now, and my students have ranged from 5 to 18, meaning I feel confident teaching from year 1 all the way to year 13 and beyond.

Having taught a variety of subjects to pupils of ranging ages and abilities, I believe that my teaching style is effective and I am confident that I can communicate well with my students and adapt my approach accordingly.
