Jake
Hi, I’m Jake. I am a second year studying History at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford. I took Further Mathematics, Mathematics, English Literature and History at A-Level and achieved four A*s.
I have been tutoring for over 2 years and have experience teaching Maths, English and Sciences from KS2 to GCSE level. Over the last year I have also been involved in tutoring Oxbridge candidates for History, working on their Personal Statement, HAT (History Aptitude Test) technique, and interview skills. I have taught a whole range of students, from high-fliers to those struggling in the classroom and in need of personalised, one-on-one attention. My aim as a tutor is to identify a student’s strengths and weaknesses from an early stage so that lessons can be tailored to their preferred styles of learning. I believe that a close relationship between the tutor and client is paramount to making good progress week after week. Talking about a student’s interests outside the classroom is a key part of this, whether it be involvement in sports teams or personal hobbies at home.
Particularly when teaching history, I look to use my own passion for the subject to help students develop their own intellectual curiosities. I have had many inspiring teachers and professors before that have helped me, from an early age, realise how history is far more than a case of facts and figures. Genuine enthusiasm for history is – from experience – the most important thing to demonstrate when it comes to applying for universities.
