Alfie - Human Sciences, University of oxford

Hi there! I’m Alfred and I graduated with a First Class BA in Human Sciences from St John’s College, Oxford. I am also currently awaiting the results of my MSc in Social Anthropology, also at St John’s, for which I am predicted a First. Throughout my time at Oxford I have been building up my tutoring experience as well as working for the St John’s College Access and Admissions Office. These two streams of work have now united in my speciality for tutoring students aiming for Oxbridge. With the detailed insider knowledge I have gained from my role in the Admissions Office, I am well-equipped to help students build the self-belief and critical thinking skills required for a competitive application.

My tutoring style is rooted in kindness and confidence. Through creating a space in which students feel safe to make mistakes and think creatively, I aim to empower their academic independence as a skill they can take with them throughout their scholarly journey. I also recognise that every student is different, and I strive to tailor my lessons to each individual, ensuring that they are learning with the approach that best suits them. Having achieved four A*s and an A at A-Level (Maths, Biology, Spanish, English Lang/Lit, and Chemistry), two academic prizes for my work at Oxford University, and a First Class BA, I understand that results are important. Alongside my commitment to confidence and kindness, I am ambitious in pushing my students to achieve their best. Regardless of the level at which the student is working, I am proud to foster their skillset towards success.

With a focus on relating concepts between disciplines, Human Sciences has equipped me with the interdisciplinary skills to teach a range of subjects. I find that the skills a student utilises in their favourite lessons can often be transferred to the topics which they struggle with. By helping the student to understand that such connections can be drawn within and between disciplines, I hope to help enrich the student’s approach to learning as a whole, as well as within specific subjects. I have been very grateful to learn the power of such interdisciplinary thinking during my time at Oxford, and it is my pleasure to introduce these academic tools to the next generation of scholars.
