Alec - economics, University of cambridge

Hi! I’m Alec and I graduated from Queens’ College, Cambridge with a 1st Class BA in Economics this summer. After enjoying my undergraduate so much, I decided to stay on for an MPhil in Economic Research in which I specialise in Political Economics (applying economic theory and analysis to political problems). I have additionally had internships at Morgan Stanley and Frontier Economics that provide me with a real-world perspective of economics in action.

Throughout my undergraduate I consistently excelled receiving multiple college awards for academic excellence. Outside of academics I play for my college rugby team, having captained in my 3rd year, and casually play badminton. Additionally, I founded the Queens’ College Economics Society that held events with speakers such as Nobel Laureate Michael Spence and Cass Sunstein (author of Nudge).

Before university, I achieved 4 A*’s at A-Level in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Without studying economics nor any essay subjects at A-Level, this was quite an unorthodox preparation for a degree in economics. This experience provided me with a more scientific approach to economics that helped me understand what makes a successful economist. The two core principles, I believe, to becoming an effective economist are 1) a genuine curiosity to understand the world and 2) being able to apply logic and communicate it effectively.

Interviews at Cambridge aim to test these two qualities through questions on your interests, potentially relying on your personal statement, and through solving economic problems that are meant to reflect the supervision system. The mock interviews I hold will reflect this by directly using actual questions used in interviews, whilst I will tailor interest questions to your personal statement. I will provide detailed feedback and advice adjusted to the specific college you have applied to.
